Under One Roof

Canadian Roofing Reference Manual

9.2.6 Fasteners

Nails used for the installation of wood shakes and shingles are hot-dipped zinc coated, aluminium or stainless steel type 304 or 316. Do not use copper because under moist conditions electrolytic action will pit the metal. Aluminium fasteners should not be used with CCA preservative treated shingles or shakes. Staples must be stainless steel in the application of wood shakes and shingles. Always ensure the fastener penetrates the roof deck a minimum 12.7 mm (1/2 in).

Wood shingles and shakes can be applied by anyone reasonably skilled with simple tools, but highly professional, rapid application is an art that is mastered by relatively few. After you learn the fundamentals of wood roofing you can develop speed only through practice and self-discipline. An experienced installer moves like a robot in high gear yet doesn’t sacrifice quality for quantity.
