CRCA Announces Roofing Canada Award Winner
Ottawa, Ontario — (May 30, 2017) – The Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA) has announced that Toitures Trois Étoiles Inc. from Lasalle is the recipient of its annual Roofing Canada Award for their work on the Windsor Building in Montreal. The award was presented at the association’s Annual General Meeting held April 23, 2017 in Niagara Falls.
The work consisted of renovating the existing mansard roof by deconstructing the existing cladding (asphalt shingles and plywood), integrating a ventilated wall, slate shingles and parapet capping, cornices, 66 skylights and copper flashings. The work involved all four sides of the building, from the cornice of the 8th floor to the parapets of the main flat roof.
Renovating the mansard roof of The Windsor posed many challenges. The heritage character of the building, the height and geographical location of the project, the number of copper details, and the winter work did nothing to make the workers’ job any easier to complete. The Windsor building is more than a century old and located right in the middle of downtown Montreal. In order to demolish and rebuild the mansard roof, scaffolding had to be installed 10 floors high with the top part cantilevered to follow the curve of the mansard roof, and all that in the middle of the downtown area where the safety of passers-by is the number one priority. Once scaffolds were erected, coordinating material deliveries of nearly 25,000 slates and over 40,000 pounds of natural copper had to be arranged to minimize traffic jams at rush hour.
“Our members are involved some very interesting, challenging and rewarding work. We received seven submissions this year for the award and selecting one project to earn the award was extremely difficult. We are proud to count Toitures Trois Étoiles as one of our members,” stated Bob Brunet CRCA’s Executive Director. This award winning project will be highlighted in the 2017 Fall/Winter issue of Roofing Canada.
The Roofing Canada Award recognizes a project completed by a CRCA member based on outstanding workmanship, innovation, service to the community and or service to the industry. All entries were judged by their peers for their significant contribution to the roofing industry.
