Canadian Roofing Reference Manual

3.2.5 Fire Protection

Fire protection and fire prevention are equally important on all re-roofing projects. A fire on a re-roofing job has the opportunity to cause much more damage than in a partially completed building.

Upon arrival at the site, the roofer must be familiar with existing fire protection (fire safety plan, fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems) and ensure the building owner is aware of the potential risks associated with the roofing operation. If any hot works are being used, it is advisable that the local fire department be notified.

If a roofing kettle or tanker is used, it should be located far enough from the building that a fire would not spread should the kettle or tanker ignite.
