10.2 Gauges and Thickness Of Metal

Following is a chart showing the commonly available gauges and thickness of metals, as well as the approximate weight per square foot for each. When specifying or ordering metal according to thickness, it is preferable to use decimal thickness rather than gauges, because of the tolerances allowed under each gauge designation. Note that only steels are specified by gauge. Aluminium is specified by thickness. Copper may be specified by weight or thickness.
