Canadian Roofing Reference Manual

3.3 Cold Weather Conditions

Cold weather roofing in Canada presents difficult problems because of low temperatures, snow, high wind, ice and rain, but with proper foresight and planning these problems can be minimized. It must be remembered that practices and techniques used in the warm weather are sometimes totally inadequate during cold weather conditions.

Generally, a temperature of 4.4°C (40°F) is considered the threshold for cold weather roofing applications. However, in recent years, manufacturers’ have improved the minimum application temperature for many of their product so consult the manufacturer for specific product temperature requirements.

Roofers should be aware of weather conditions and the manufacturer’s minimum application temperatures and limitations for any products that they are installing and make appropriate modifications on the job site to address these requirements.
