Safety data sheets (SDS) are technical documents that provide detailed information on the following characteristics of a controlled product:
- Hazards of the product
- Measures to protect workers from those hazards
- Safe handling and emergency measures
SDSs are usually prepared by the manufacturer or supplier of the product. Every product that is classified as a hazardous product under WHMIS that is intended for use, handling or storage in a workplace in Canada must have an SDS.
WHMIS 2015 requires a standard 16-section SDS. All information on the SDS must appear in the specified order. The following table provides SDS headings and specific information under each heading.
